With an new design, features and powertrains, the new-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift will be more upmarket than the current model.
January 12, 2017 – First launched in 2005, Swift’s success is attributed to sporty looks, frugal engine choices and affordable pricing. Giving a stiff competition to rivals in the segment, the hatchback offers value for money. Maruti has been consistently upgrading the model and is prepping yet again to transit it into the next generation. The 2017 Maruti Swift will witness extensive change over the model it precedes, inclusive of aesthetic changes, mechanical updates and new on-board equipment. Talking of the aesthetic changes, it will receive radical changes, transforming the entire look. While the basic silhouette has been carried forward, the overall design has evolved with edgy elements adding to the visual appearance.
From what we know so far, the new generation Swift will be largely similar to the global model revealed lately in Japan, but it may vary in terms of equipment. Following suit, interior will be a step-up compared to the current model donning a sporty look and new tech including a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay etc on the range topping variants. It is to be noted that the interior layout on the India-spec model is likely to be different from the global model. Coming to the mechanicals, the new 2017 Maruti Swift will use the same set of engines that power the current model-1.2 litre K-Series petrol engine and 1.3 litre DDiS oil burner. However, Maruti is expected to tune the engines for increased power output. New Maruti Swift 2017 Launch Date

The Japan bound new-gen Swift is priced at Rs ¥1.3 million for the base 2WD variant and goes up to ¥1.9 million for the top-of-the-line 4WD hybrid variant. In Indian currency, the new Swift price for the Japanese model ranges from Rs 7.75 lakh to Rs 11.21 lakh. Thankfully, the one meant for the Indian market will cost as high as the Japan-spec model. That said the estimated new Maruti Swift price in India could start from Rs 5 lakh for the entry level variant. The new Maruti Swift 2017 will continue to source power from the same 1.2 litre, K-Series petrol and 1.3 litre DDiS oil burner used in the current model. Although, these engines could be tuned to develop higher power output and increased fuel economy. This will in turn also improve the performance. Currently, the 1.2 litre K-Series petrol engine puts out 83bhp of power and the torque stands at 115Nm. Diesel powered Swift is slightly low on power compared to the petrol engine, making 74bhp and 190Nm of torque.
As for the transmission options, Maruti could add a CVT to the carline along with the five-speed manual unit. In addition to the aforementioned engines, Maruti is apparently developing a diesel powertrain, displacing 1200cc. There is yet no official word on the same; hence it would be a bit premature to confirm it. Talking of the Japanese model, it will get a 1.2 litre K12C petrol, 1.0 litre Boosterjet and a 1.2 litre Dualjet Diesel engine with SHVS system. Rumour is also doing the rounds that Maruti India could also introduce the Boosterjet and SHVS variants; however it is yet to be confirmed by the carmaker.

Mileage is yet another crucial parameter after pricing that could make things work for a vehicle, especially in a complex market like India. The new Maruti Swift 2017 will be built on a new platform made of 41% tensile steel, hence it will be lighter and stronger than the current model. This implicates higher fuel economy compared to the current model. The new Maruti Swift mileage for the petrol variant is estimated at 21kmpl as against the diesel variants that are likely to deliver 27kmpl.

New Maruti Swift 2017 Features

Exterior features on the new Swift will include a large hexagonal grille in front, automatic LED headlamps, halogen fog lamps and floating roof. Rear will come with wraparound tail lamps, rear wiper & washer and fog lamps on the lower bumper. Also, the rear door handle is expected to be placed on the C-pillar.
Inside, it will pack a new steering wheel, new HVAC controls with circular vents in the centre, two-pod instrument cluster and automatic climate control. In terms of entertainment, the new Swift 2017 will benefit from the touchscreen SmartPlay system and voice command & navigation system. Styling on the new Swift will be modish; the contrasting trim on dashboard, door panels and floor will reinforce the sporty character.

Other Details

Suspension set up on the new Swift will include McPherson strut with coil spring in front and torsion beam with coil spring at rear. As for the stopping power, it will be sourced from disc units at front & rear axles. To add further dint to the braking force, the new Swift will get anti-lock-braking system with electronic braking system.

New Maruti Swift 2017 Dimensions

The new Swift will be 10mm shorter and 30mm taller than the current model measuring 3,840mm in length and 1,500mm in height. Width will be around 1,695mm and the wheelbase will be longer by 20mm at 2,450mm, implicating a larger cabin. As for the ground clearance, the Japanese model has a ground clearance of 120mm, significantly less than India-bound model at 170mm. The luggage storage space will be around 37 litres.

Underpinning the Baleno platform built of 41% tensile steel, the new Swift is not only stronger and stiffer, but it is lighter also. That said it is expected to lose 100kgs of weight, providing better crash protection.  Sporting new design cues and key elements, the new Swift is a complete departure from the current model. The front profile is all-new with a large hexagonal mesh grille transforming the face. It also gets projector headlamps and fog lamps in front.
Side facet is largely the same with new additions such as the diamond cut alloy rims. The integrated turn indicators on the ORVMs will be carried over from the current model. What is new on the 2017 Swift is the floating roofline that makes a huge difference to its looks. Rear side has also received new wraparound tail-lamps, more pointed roof spoiler, larger bumper coloured in body paint, a flatter lid and shorter windscreen.

Just like exterior profile, comprehensive changes have been made to the interior. Inside, the new Maruti Swift 2017 will get a redesigned dashboard, new steering wheel and contrasting trim on the door & floor panels. A new infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone will sit on the dashboard. The new three-spoke steering wheel will come with mounted telephone and audio controls.
Besides, it will also sport new HVAC controls with circular vents at the centre. In terms of in-cabin tech, new Swift will pack automatic climate control with integrated digital displays and two-pod instrument dials with a large MID.

New Maruti Swift 2017 Competition

In the entry level B segment, the all-new 2017 Maruti Swift will go up against models including Hyundai Grand i10 that is due for a facelift, new Ford Figo and Volkswagen Polo.  With radical changes made to the new Swift, it is likely to give a tough competition to its rivals.
